Conditions were ideal for a late spring ski.

Skiing in the merry, merry month of May -- sunny, great glide, lots of hills to climb -- beauty all around me. South Branch Road to the Dome Mountain turn-off and return. What a life this retirement is!

Summit Snowshoe Hike

Shnowshoe hikes trekking to the summit.
(larger version)
We had a good snowshoe today. There were only about ten or a dozen of us, but we all made it to the top of the hill.
The ski trails were too hard for skiing today, and I don't think they'll have improved by tomorrow. Apart from the snowshoers today, and the Katimavik group from North West River who manned the rental room, hardly anyone else was there.
Cheers,
Graham.

Summit snowshoe hike this Saturday
Posted 19 April 2012, 11:24 pm ADT
Hi everyone,
After the spectacular success of last week's snowshoe walk, Betty Anne has come up with another new lookout for us to aim for. The summit affords another great view of our trails from a different perspective. Once again t uses the 'back door' approach, increasing height in stages, rather than climbing the steep, front part of the hill.
The North West River Katimavik Group has offered to look after the rental room. If someone wants to leave a camera at the chalet, we could ask...

Hi everyone,
What a great snowshoe trail! Thanks Betty Anne for all the work involved in finding it, cutting and marking it. Well done to all who made it to the lookout and enjoyed the picnic; what a nice crowd we had. And best wishes to Fred and Muna who are moving to Nova Scotia soon and may not get on the Birch Brook trails again.
Jake sent me the attached map. There were quite a few new faces in our group today, so please send this on to anyone you know who came along. Our speed doesn't...

Farewell snowshoe hike for Fred and Muna
Posted 11 April 2012, 12:12 am ADT
Hello everyone.
Despite some warm temperatures each afternoon, our ski and snowshoe trails held up really well over the Easter weekend. Some members stayed at Colin's Hut. I got out to McLean Lake a couple of times and across the Lynx a few times, and all the trails were in great shape.
This Saturday, 14 April, I'm hoping that as many of you as possible will join a snowshoe walk as a farewell to Fred and Muna. They'll be leaving HV-GB in June. The snowshoe route will be on a new trail that...

Local skiers win medals at Great Labrador Loppet
Posted 03 April 2012, 7:11 pm ADT
The Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club was represented at the Great Labrador Loppet by Al Bock, Natasha Andrews and Jim Shouse.

On a beautiful sunny day with a high of -7 C, with an excellent groomed trail for classic and skate, a hoard of skiers, local and from away, took to the trails on March 31 for the 37th running of the Great Labrador Loppet.
The feed stations lived up to their reputations with excellent food and drink and lots of moose soup.
The support was great from the RNC, the Ham Radio Club, the Canadian Ski Patrol, Search & Rescue, Town of Labrador City, White Wolf Snowmobile Club and Fermont club. Again...

George Lefeuvre will be inducted in the Sports Hall of Fame on April 14.

BY TY DUNHAM / THE AURORA
As George Lefeuvre stepped off the train the bitter February air tore through his lungs, a common greeting from the harsh winters in Labrador West. That he would be inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame 51 years later was likely not on his mind, at least not as much as finding a warm bed.
Still in its infancy in 1961, Labrador City was known as the Carol Project, and Mr. Lafeuvre made his way to what the workers called Campsite. A small...

Fantastic day at the lakes
Posted 02 April 2012, 11:09 pm ADT
It was a beautiful day for the annual Day at the Lakes.
(larger version)
Hi everyone,
What a day! The weather was perfect for our Day at the Lakes on Saturday. A great ski, then soup, sandwiches, cookies, hotdogs, sitting in the sun out on the frozen lake, with the Labrador flag all around us. It was a tough time, but some of us just had to do it. Robin and John put up a couple of exhibition tents (open at the sides), set up a barbeque and we were in business. Quite a few skiers visited Colin's Hut. Congratulations to all those who did it for the first time.
